Materials
When selecting materials for CityCenter, designers chose products manufactured with recycled content in order to reduce the exploitation of virgin resources. They also sought local and regional products to minimize the emission of greenhouse gases generated during transport and delivery.
HIGHLIGHTS
- More than 50 percent of the wood used in ARIA and Crystals is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Products carrying the FSC label come from forests that are responsibly managed, meaning clear cutting is avoided, local laws are followed, and the ecosystem and native species are protected.
- By allocating space for an onsite concrete production plant, CityCenter greatly reduced mileage traveled by trucks to deliver, literally, thousands of loads of concrete to the site.
- CityCenter sought and utilized the products of more than 260 manufacturers located within a 500-mile radius of the project site. Purposefully identifying and partnering with nearby vendors significantly reduces air pollution generated during transportation of products and materials.
Fun Fact:
The museum-worthy art collection at CityCenter also boasts environmentally sustainable material selections. Maya Lin's 133-foot interpretation of the Colorado River, suspended high above the reception area in ARIA, uses reclaimed silver in the spirit of CityCenter's commitment to sustainability, and pays homage to Nevada's standing as the "Silver State." Nancy Rubins' "Big Edge" piece, located in front of Vdara, uses a number of salvaged boats, rather than newly manufactured vessels.
